I have an opportunity to work in Higher Ed. I’m an A2 in tax, Senior in Oct. Without the distraction of vacations etc. I have come to realize how much I do not like my job. I previously worked in Higher Ed and I loved it. I genuinely enjoy interacting w/students, improving their experiences, and helping them navigate life. The benefits are good, PTO is great, and of course WLB bc it’s 9-5. The only issue is it would be 5-8k pay cut. Thoughts?

Thank you for the reply!

Would give 5-8k for happiness (or at least not unhappiness) at my job. I say do it! Currently trying to decide what my next move is. What was your route to higher ed?

like

Thanks for the reply! When I was in grad school I needed a job, so I thought what better than on campus. Ironically it was that job that led me to pursue accounting after I got my MA. It wasn’t a high paying job, but it was extremely rewarding. A lot of students, especially first college generation, have trouble navigating finances, academic life, external pressures so to be able to help them be successful made me feel like I was making a small difference. Now as I’m just looked as a utilization % at Big4, it’s not quite the same. I get along with everyone at my current job and got high performing reviews, but I know my heart isnt in it. Out of the blue an old coworker said there was an opening and asked if I was interested. The only thing that makes me hesitant is the thought of a pay cut and loss of potential of future earnings as Higher Ed cant typically give out bonuses or high % raises.

OP, that amount could be made up by have side jobs if you’re interested. Go for the job that makes you happy. If you need extra money, you can find another skill or passion you have and try to monetize it.

I graduated in May of 22. I transitioned from being an intern to being a full time counselor, now for 6 months. I feel like I might be catching my agency at a tough time, but as an employee it doesn’t seem to be trying anything to keep me here besides the occasional ‘motivational’ posts from the administrative team. I felt like I was lowballed during my offer, and my negotiation salary was denied since this is technically my first “professional” job. Pt 2 in comments:

My questions are is it typical to have 1 person doing both the billing and denials within a new vertical for all ins.? How difficult is billing for dme as I only have experience in gyn onc and lactation billing? What's a fair salary? I have 8+ yoe in rcm, no certs.
