You can download the forms. Try like Legal Zoom or Rocket Lawyer. You then fill them out, print, and file them with the county clerk after you both sign and get it notorized. You will just have to pay the filing fee. After it gets filed, a judge reviews it and signs the decree. Some of those sites give you more info, by state, on how to file. Do you have a legal service benefit at your firm? Try there too if you have one.
We did it without lawyers fighting against each other but I did get a separation agreement written up. This was because I needed more certainty in the terms we agreed to, but, we told the lawyers what to write.
Yes, you can do it on your own. What state are you in? I'm in IL and we found a mediator who gave me the templates for the MSA and for the Joint Parental Agreement and I drafted up the final terms working with my ex.
I live in VA. Do you mind me asking how much the entire process cost you?
I think $1500. But this was almost 10 years ago. The mediator charged hourly rates for a couple issues that she helped mediate. And paid about $500 to a financial advisor to confirm alimony and child support numbers because ex wasn't convinced my math was right.
Ok, thanks for sharing. We have no kids so that part should easy. Thanks again for the help
