My wife did this to a terrible “lifer” who needed to go. This woman was too comfortable in her tenure and did not want to adapt. They got rid of her and it was great for everyone.

Typically when I have done this it’s because prior leadership tolerated sub par contribution when I’m not willing to. Sucks but make sure you are clear of the new expectations and how they vary from previous expectations.
Sounds like a case of ageism. Document everything and if they let you go you may have a case
Are you certain it’s an actual PIP? Or just feeling like it’s one? These are pretty detailed and a lot of paperwork so just confirming as your next paths are different.
