I heard Manager at Accenture is slightly lower than M at your traditional Big 4. Is this true? If I’m a SC in Deloitte S&O up for promotion next year, would jumping to Accenture as M1 be a lateral?

I was a consultant at Accenture and went to PwC as a manager since I was up for promotion.

Going with a no on this.

like

Accenture just doesn’t have the senior consultant role (consultant direct to manager promotion) like other big 4. Senior consultant designation is for MBA campus hires. Manager level is equivalent to other big 4 managers though

like

Accenture Consultant is equivalent to Deloitte/EY Senior Consultant; PwC Senior Associate; and KPMG Consultant.

Manager is equivalent for all 5

like

Associate Manager is a role in CDO, which is basically our tech services division (as opposed to C&M, or Client & Market, which is our consulting division) - this role does not exist in C&M. It does indeed lie between Consultant and Manager.
CDO roles are not comparable to C&M roles, nor are they equivalent to other consulting company's roles

I’m a SC in Deloitte’s Federal Strategy & Operations (Finance) practice. 6-7 years of total experience. Considering a move to M at Accenture (also Federal) in something related to finance transformation.

I have to stay in Federal practice due to not wanting to be apart from family.

like

OP, based on that I would go for the Manager role then. The other option would be to come in as a year 3/4 Consultant and then target a promotion in your first or second year

like

Sorry yeah. In my experience working at Deloitte and EY and getting offered at Accenture, and all the accompanying research and conversations with folks in my network who work at all three, along with conversations with HR and interviewers and the levels I was offered and explained, Manager at Deloitte is a longer goal to achieve than Manager at EY and Accenture; 5-7 years is reasonable/common at the latter two, but would really be unheard of at anything less than 7 years at Deloitte (talking about people without MBA). More like 7-10. Most SCs I knew at Deloitte were managing the same amount of work as managers at EY, had similar levels of experience, and operated at the same level. I can’t speak to PWC and KPMG directly, but anecdotally have heard they would align more to EY and Accenture’s cadences I’ve laid out above.

Deloitte has a separate Consulting practice and Advisory practice. In Advisory there are only 2 levels (C > SC > M) before Manager, while in Consulting there are 3 (BA > C > SC > M).

At Deloitte your typical career progression track goes:
Analyst - 2 years
Consultant - 2-3 years
Senior Consultant - 2-4 years
Manager

If my understanding is correct, Accenture’s career progression track goes
Analyst - 1 year
Senior Analyst - 2 years
Consultant - 2-3 years
Manager

like

Usually takes 5-7 years in my practice to reach Manager in my practice, as one reference point

Hmmm. Okay I think I see the distinction now. In the rest of the advisory practices across the big 4, Manager is the 3rd level (aka 5-7 years to Manager). However at Deloitte Consulting, since there is an extra step (Analyst level), Manager is the 4th level. This mean most people don’t make Manager until 7-8 years.

Analyst 2 years
Consultant 2-3 years
Senior Consultant 2-4 years
Manager

I think this is true. At least for the Accenture to Deloitte comparison.

SC1, don't think so, at least between equivalent practices. OP, which practice are you in and which practice are you targeting at ACN?

A friend of mine is an “Associate Manager.” Where does that fall in regards to typical years of experience and rank? I figured it’s obviously somewhere between C and M.

It’s the same

PWC1–that is definitely wrong

^care to elaborate?

^gotcha, that makes sense. I didn’t mean to imply my comparison was to the quality or experience of individuals at that level, but to the differences in title/role. I was more trying to highlight for OP how nomenclature can be different.

For example, Accenture actually calls their analyst level “Analyst” and “Senior Analyst”, while EY calls theirs “Consultant”

For additional context, MBA entry at the firms is (generally - pls correct if needed):
Accenture = Consultant
Deloitte = Senior Consultant
EY = Senior Consultant
PwC = Senior Associate
KPMG = Consultant

But Accenture and Deloitte actually have more levels, 3 each below manager, while EY and PwC have only 2. SC1 is definitely right though, and I’m in agreement that the roles I listed above will vary in quality and experience between firms.

Yep exactly. Yeah and I don’t mean to imply that Deloitte is “better” because of all the levels before manager. Just the way these companies decide to name their people I guess

Yep - they may also all have different timing in the promotions between levels which has an impact. I think it also really depends on the group. An M&A team may have a totally different look at promotion/levels than a Cloud implementation team.

SC1 I came from KPMG’s MC practice. It went Associate to Senior Associate. Where do you see consultant?

I have two job offers from start-up companies:

Option 1 - well known fintech company and about to go IPO. Will be doing corporate tax. Probably will turn into hybrid of WFH/coming into the office.

Option 2 - series A (been around about 3 years). Tax operation with high possibility of being exposed to other areas in accounting and finance of the company. Fully remote.

Compensation from both companies are the same. I would appreciate some advice on which option would you choose and why.

Starting a new job next month, and considering taking two days off for kids’ spring break next month. Not sure whether it’s appropriate to request time off for a new job (I would’ve preferred not to take any time off for first three months). I may just be able to just ask for a single Friday off (so 1 day rather than 2 days).

Any thoughts on whether I should proceed with the request? I just came from big law and want to make sure I’m not making a bad impression on my colleagues.
