The counterargument SHOULD be that we're getting more done with AI to justify MORE pay.
Buuuut nope... end of the day a lot of leaders are just looking for a free lunch. Loads of work done for no cost. They're hoping AI is that silver bullet.
I've literally been told that "we've all been given access to some really smart AI interns" (our claude code subscriptions) and that we should lean in to using them well. This... after YEARS of me asking for more juniors and grads because:
1. We need the manpower.
2. In the absence of promotion a lot of the seniors want the opportunity to mentor people at least.
3. If we don't train juniors now we won't have new seniors in 5 years' time. Just the same shots we had before but now with 15 years of experience and willing to charge more for their expertise.
True - but you need to know to get quality out of the Ai and know its quality. You could possibly get away with fewer people, but the people you keep should be paid more. So, I don’t think there is any winning long term.
If the tools are making work easier, that means productivity increases. A halfway-competent manager would understand that. But then, that they make you work in a counterproductive corporate office that costs an average of $16k/year/person shows that their judgement is inherently unsound.
It's all because of a messed up series of incentives and priorities. Is the work output good? - Yes, do we attract and retain talent? - Yes ; Your job as a manager is to focus on improving and preserving those things, not being a hall monitor for how much it costs the business.
Tools help, but we’re still using human skill and judgment. Pay shouldn’t drop just because tech assists the work.
Pay doesn't drop BECAUSE of that. It drops because it's every company leadership's dream to have cheap labour.
This whole AI driven efficiencies thing is a total red herring. We're paying a hidden tax as companies and we don't really know it yet. (Namely code familiarity and knowing what's up when something goes bad).
No one in the workplace above you cares what you go through, been through, or will go through..it's me, myself, and I and what can I do to steamroll the next guy and get ahead...trust me, they do not care about you..so you need to focus on yourself..don't worry about what they do, they are gonna do what they are gonna do...and so will you my friend...
