I just hit one year at my current firm. I like the office culture and my team really needs me. However, my firm (an AM 50) is super cheap and doesn’t want to pay me more. I’m getting paid way below market standard now. Few former paralegals told me that the firm doesn’t give higher than 4% annual raise and won’t counter if people leave no matter how good you are. There are other jobs opening. Should I apply or should I wait till I see my raise number in January?

Apply. Not sure what you think will be different by waiting. Now is actually better because most people aren't willing to move before the holidays so if you get an offer you'll be ahead of all the candidates who wait.

You’re getting paid “way below market” now? Were you not when they hired you 1 year ago? I’m confused. 4% a year is pretty standard and most people don’t even get that. I’m not sure what you think things are like elsewhere.

I don't know where you are, USA? in Canada jobs are scarice and super hard to find paralegal jobs. At one time, 10 years ago, you can pick and choose your jobs. Now, firms are hiring LA and train them. Super hard for senior paralegals. Stay where you are if the job market is scarce. Hard times.

It depends on the type of law. I made bank in family law. 6 figures. There is alot of money in corporate law. You need to have a firm grasp on civil. Litigation. Litigation also raises your calye.

My base is at 150 now but all competitor firms are paying 185 for same role. Feel if I stay, with this raise rate, I need at least 5 years to match other firms’ level.

My boss (atty) is so disorganized! I’ve been with him 6 months and he’s having a hard time delegating, sharing info and managing deadlines. I’ve organized the caseload to manage the deadlines. He says he wants me to help with discovery but when I offer to start on one, he says he needs to do it. (Since he might have to present as evidence) When I give him deadlines and ask for the docs he says he’ll get to it. It’s a small 1 man firm, and I’m the first assistant besides his wife. Any advice?

Where do you find the time to get everything done in the day when you have multiple partners, associates and equity partners that interrupt you and want things turned around immediately while simultaneously working on deadlines? I feel like I’m the only one that can’t manage a 70+ case load without letting someone down. I constantly have to say “Can I do this tomorrow?” Etc. I don’t even have time to bill on the clock. I work until 7p at least every night. Top 10 family law firm.

Has anyone dealt with a lack of praise from attorneys? I'm not someone who needs to hear "good job" all the time, but we just got a huge deal closed that I worked really hard on and had a lot of overtime. And once it closed, the lead attorney praised the other attorneys, and said nothing about me or my work. I might just be overly sensitive, but it kind of stung. Thoughts?

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.
