This is not really for attorneys but there is a paralegal site called Perfectly Paralegal that has a billing guide with language. https://www.perfectlyparalegal.com/
I bought it and I’ve given it to every paralegal I’ve worked with to explain billing.
Also, you can’t go wrong with the classic formula:
Analysis of X in order to do Y in order to further develop defenses (feel free to be specific of the defense)
If you are reviewing docs: Analysis of X (approximate page #) in order to Y to further defend the claim etc…
Never use the word “file” like reviewed documents in file because sometimes those get auto flagged, also, at least one company flags the word deposition for some reason, which of course is attorney work, so we just use “examination of plaintiff” and that doesn’t t give us issues
I don’t have a spreadsheet but here is my basic advice. Make sure your entries sound like something a lawyer would do. Avoid anything that sounds like you are scheduling things or otherwise doing something a paralegal or legal assistant would obviously do. Avoid billing for discussions with anyone in your firm about the file. Always explain why you’re doing what you’re doing in the entry. You can almost always say that you’re doing what you’re doing to assess liability and/or damages.
It does. Thank you :)
