Only YOU can determine what’s best for YOUR life. Drown out the noise. Congrats on knowing what you want (and don’t want) and pursuing it. That beats living in the prison of others’ expectations.
Sorry, what is thing you call “the sun”?
Big firey orb in the sky. Pretty scary. Interferes with your ability to see the computer screen.
You only have one body, and really you are responsible for taking care of it! Enjoy your new position!
It's hard to say without knowing more about your specific situation (debt, savings, kids, health, geographic area, anticipated inheritance, etc), but based on the limited facts presented, it sounds like you got in your own way and sabotaged yourself.
Work to live, NOT live to work.
I firmly believe that when they day comes to meet your maker, you will not be thinking "I really wish I spent more time in my office working for the partnership and less time with my family or less time doing the things I enjoy." Time is priceless and not replaceable. Good luck!
Very few of us want on our tombstone, "I wish I had billed a few more hours."
I gave up the money for what I do now and have no regrets. I get to see my kids grow up, hear about their day, answer questions about home work and eat with my wife. As I get older, having argued and won cases that resulted in published opinions, I realize the most important thing I'll ever do in life is have children and raise them in a happy, secure home.
Beautifully said!
Proud of you! Stick to your gut. If it was the right decision for you, it was the right decision. You have to live your life, not the haters
But also, I completely understand how tough it can be when parents don’t get it. I had a similar interaction last year when I did the reverse: left state government and returned to private practice
I think it was a smart move. You will be set up for retirement and still have a life before that. Everyone I know that went with the government was very happy.
I left private practice for government and I do not regret it even a single second. Do I wish i was paid something remotely approximating my worth? sure. Do I miss any other aspect of private practice?
hell no.
Congratulations, that sounds like a great move!
Only you are going to be able to answer that question.
If what you value is free time, with very little out of work hours responsibilities, then it was probably a great move.
If a part of you will wonder "what if?" You might've gotten in your way at the critical point due to burnout or other factors.
Some people really enjoy partnership once they get there. Others try it out and solidify that it wasn't for them. I know I enjoy private practice far more as partner than I did as an associate, but that's me. I never wanted to go in house. I did a long term stint as a favor to some clients, and I hated the bureaucracy of it all. And I actually had less flexibility because the hours were more structured. On the other hand, private practice at the partner level affords me a level of autonomy and flexibility I value. But my values may not be your values, so, again, only you can make that determination.

this is a refreshingly balanced perspective
If you're happy with the move that's what matters. So far as making a mistake, the mistake might have been spending seven years chasing something you didn't want anyway. Don't go along with anybody's guilt trips, enjoy living a normal life.
No you did not make a mistake. Just because we are attorneys, it does not mean that we are robots who want/can work 15 hour days, 7 days a week. I prefer to have a life outside of my job. I think you made the right decision!!!
Why would you feel guilty? It is your life, your decision.
Sounds like a great decision to me
Sounds like a great decision. Totally jealous! Good for you. No one else has to live the daily ins and outs of a demanding law firm job, but they’ll sure have opinions about it. You know best, congrats!!
I love this move - good for you and great for the friends and family who will get to spend more time with you!! They’ll come around when they start seeing you more and seeing how much more relaxed you get to be. Best wishes in the new role!
Not at all - i did Big law, start-up and then a trading firm... and i have had a year out now and it has been the best thing. hoping my next job is something where i can actually see sunlight, read a book, spending time with family and friends...
Congratulations!!!
