I keep wondering if prestige really matters once you’re past the early stages of your career. Clients care about responsiveness and results, not Am Law rankings. But inside the profession, people still chase the “big name” firms and elite clients like it’s the only way forward. I know lawyers who traded down for better hours and pay consistency, but they talk about it like a guilty secret. Would you ever give up prestige for lifestyle, or do you think reputation is still the currency that buys long-term opportunities?

I learned that prestige and reputation only matters to other lawyers. Beyond that, it’s an “oh cool” at most to people that actually matter in your life.

Depends on the client. I agree, a lot of clients just hire someone they were referred to whom they like. That’s much less the case for bigger companies.

Which one would you pick?

Big name shop. Shitty account, but you get opportunities beyond that.

Shop with bad reputation that lacks PR and hardly enters awards but has a lot of book-worthy projects.

I am concerned with fulfilling billable hours requirement. I’m required to hit 2100 hours yearly and I’m at ~1,500 hours and I think I’ll hit 150-180hours this month. What will happen if I don’t hit my targeted amount by the end of my year.

Which one would you choose?

1) Am100 firm with 1900+ billable hour requirement, very reputable in the region
2) Am200 firm with 1750+ billable hour requirement, less reputable in the region because it’s a satellite office, pays $35k less than option 1

Anyone know when Ch. 7 BKs must close by? Is this changed by when there are adversary proceedings (alleged fraudulent transfers made to a bank for CC payments)? Asking for my friend who is unfortunately involved bc of his parents, who are the debtors (he isn’t a defendant or a debtor in this, but the payments were made to a CC in his name—a CC he didnt know was opened in his name).

Its in Texas, and the initial BK filing was made about 23 months ago. TIA!

Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. I'm grateful to have lots of good work but not sure how to course correct.
