I lead team of 30 contractors from various companies. We had to eliminate some positions (downsize the team), without much of a heads up from the client. As a result, we have to let go of those employees (cannot keep them on the bench).

Is there a proper way to announce this to the entire team? I don't want the team to feel anxious but i expect there to be questions. Any suggestions on how to phrase it without embarrassing those few employees? They're aware that it's not performance based

Might need a communication coach for this one… I would say that it’s not performance based and that you are very disappointed to have to let them go and that they will get positive reference from you and help in their search of the next opportunity?

Your HR should support you through this if not, manage it themselves

Usually we let employees know about the restructure on the day they are being let go and then it is announced to the team.

they will want to know of the next wave pf firing will come. a d here you cannot lie.

if no say no. if we do not know, say we do not expect based on current info.


and then you always need to finish that all those who let go are taken care off, all on accordance with legislation

I just picked up a new freelance gig after coming out (again 😮‍💨) but professionally and they're really respecting my pronouns! They did a whole thing where they're having people add their pronouns to their email signature too 🥰

They never make a deal out of it and if they mess up they correct and move right along. They're from the Midwest and some of the team is older too so its really nice 😅
