I’ve been fortunate enough to work at places where this kind of behavior is the norm. It’s hard to believe there are other places out there that are toxic enough to hold back this simple human decency

To this day the most racist treatment i ever saw or experienced was in LA, not in the Midwest or South
The gender thing...so far the Midwest is ahead again lol
This is awesome, happy for you! 😃
Omg how did you go about it??
I think about doing this at work daily and just get stuck

I had the luxury of telling the recruiter before I was working with them "oh by the way I go by they/them!" And she rolled with it.
Called me later down the road and asked if I had any advice for her. I told her email signatures are pretty good and I generally have no problem letting people I work with know it's they if they get it wrong, but it'd be nice to let them know from the start instead to set them up for success. I ask people for their pronouns when given the chance too.
And I guess they had a meeting and gave people the option of changing to include their pronouns in their signatures :)
This makes my heart so happy. Thank you for sharing. This is a great story for those who aren’t often interacting with queer folks and are unsure of how to be good allies!

If I may, my piece of advice other than helping normalize asking for pronouns would be if you mess up(and we all do—my partner does too!), don't make it a big deal or express how hard it is for you or anything. I'm already super aware that I can inconvenience people and it just makes me feel more awkward. Just correct yourself, throw in a sorry if you want, and move on :)
Thanks for being a good ally!

I found a good way to nudge the email signatures thing to agencies who are behind on it is to mention if nobody knows who “Alex from IT” is, would be nice for people not to mistakenly refer to him as her or vice versa. Then slide your they/them into your signature when nobody’s looking ;)
But it’s 100000x better when they’re all on board with it, definitely a more comfortable work environment.
Congrats! This made me really happy to read :)
