"I have a strong sense of ethics and I felt that my former employer's culture didn't align with my ethics."
If an interviewer presses you for more information, just deflect and say "Those are private details that I will not divulge, and I've put that chapter behind me. Thank you for respecting my wishes on this matter."
Agree with the comments above. I’ve been in a similar situation, and I’ve learned it's always better to focus on the positive. I’d say something like, “I left because I was seeking new opportunities that align better with my career goals and values. I believe this position fits my skills and aspirations more.” It keeps things professional without sounding bitter!
You're smart to want to navigate away from badmouthing your former employers. That never goes over well, yet a lot of people will do it. Just try to gloss over the subject, it's assumed that you left because you weren't happy or you wanted more opportunity elsewhere. So just focus on how you wanted to move forward and do better for yourself.
Start with the positives, what you liked, then explain briefly your reason for leaving and the pursuit for a better fit, which is why you’re here today.
Be composed, succinct, and thoughtful about your choice of words.
Toxic environment and unethical practices.....
I will be happy to slam my previous Company..Ideal Image. I had to litigate them for my unpaid overtime. They only employ "Barbie Doll" type female employees who love to fill their faces with Botox, Juvaderm lip fillers. I have allergies that legally contraindicate me from receiving the service products. I am an older lady and they used statistics that I was not never privy to in my sales reporting to terminatr my employment after 2 year. I have spinal issues and limited to the hours per day I could work. In order to make commissions I was working 10 to 12 hour days. This caused my calf and ankles to swell. The extreme edema from too many hours of sitting caused me to be taken to the hospital on June 13th, 2023 with blood pressure levels of 200/110. I was on stroke protocol. Once I was on medical restriction of hours through New York Life who administers their federal hour restrictions they found a way to dismiss me. My quality assurance le els were always 100%. I should have listened to my former Supervisor who called me when she resigned and hinted that anyone who did not fit the brand would be fired. They admitted in writing ✍️ and on a Company wide recorded Zoom call that they were not within the Federal guidlines for paying overtime. They gave everyone a rais and started paying legal overtime then fired me. They have many lawsuits from customers who became pregnant while receiving laser hair removal treatments or any treatment as a pregnant woman cannot be treated. They were not extending their contracts and these women paid for services they could not receive. Very unscrupulous Company. Very toxic work environment.
