Happened to me this year too! Here’s some advice:
-You’ll probably do this naturally, but I treated finding a job like a full time job. I’d pick a city a day to really hit hard with research on agencies (used the creative ham website but I’m sure cooler people on this app have a better suggestion), would then do deep dives on agency sites/Glassdoor/LinkedIn etc for places I liked, and then would always apply even if they weren’t hiring for my position. My current agency didn’t list an opening for my position but here I am
-Surround yourself with positive friends/family (i was lucky enough to fly home and stay with my mom while job searching; it helped being around a positive voice in that situation)
-FILE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT ASAP (wish I had done this way sooner)
-Confirm how long your benefits will roll over (my company let us stay on our benefits for like 60 days, which I didn’t know, so I paid for COBRA...long story but this was my first time).
-Know that you got this. I found a WAY better fit with this new job so it was a blessing in disguise. Good vibes coming your way!
There are plenty of opportunities in Detroit. Stay on your toes, breathe, refocus and go!
Got laid off a few months back, now at a way better gig! Try and stay positive and network network network! Linkedin became my best friend and got me a lot of leads! You’ve got this, and it happens to almost everyone in our industry at some point!
Okay..First of all sorry to hear this. Second reach out to this lady: http://linkedin.com/in/melissasawyercareercoach
She is a top notch expert in our field and can immediately fix your linkedin profile to perform they way you need it to get good visibility in your market. Next she can make your resume and cover letter cut through the clutter. She’s pure gold and very affordable.
OP, talk to your company’s HR about how long your current insurance policy “rolls over”, some have a 30-60 day rollover and I didn’t ask them this so signed up for Cobra and paid over $400 for insurance thru Cobra. That’s definitely something HR will help you with after a layoff, and I wish I had talked to them
^ first bullet really only helps if you’re able to relocate from Detroit, sorry about that
