I make 100k in NYC. $3k in debt. 401k 10%, $900 FSA
529 $100, $1200 in rent
I want to open a rIRA, where should I go?
I also want to start investing.. Vanguard? Fidelity? How should i diversify?

IMO first step is to pay off that trivial debt unless it's 0%. Being debt free and not having that monthly payment is more valuable, to me, than getting it into the market. Plus, it frees up monthly cash flow to invest more once it's gone.

Then, max out your rIRA before you put a cent into a taxable account. Vanguard is a solid choice. If you will be doing individual stock trades make sure they are free.

I wouldn't worry so much about diversification as you are starting out. Diversify your 401k as that balance will be much more material than your taxable or even roth accounts.

The 2.3k actually is from a program with chase to pay off your debt but doesnt accrue interest. Thank God im a back up to 682 in a year. Still not the best, but to think where i came from..

like

Where do you currently bank at or have your 401k at? It’s honestly easier, especially down the road, to have them all in the same brokerage.

If you don’t plan on investing in individual stocks (i think they still charge a fee for trades that are non-vanguard) and see yourself with vanguard, then go ahead!

In ELSS mutual the total we can save save tax is 1.5lakh. Do we need to invest yearly 1.5 lakh yearly to save tax? I am planning to have a Sip of 5000 monthly for 3 years. So total money invested in 3 years will be around 60000 * 3 = 180000.
Will that be sufficient to save tax or Do I need to have a sip of 12000 per month to save tax.

So my fiancée and I are relatively late in terms of finally landing well paying jobs and being able to save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. We’re both 36 and currently rent a 2 bedroom in NY and have a combined savings of $35,000 which she wants to use as a down payment on a condo. I kinda just wanna continue saving while renting. I also literally just started contributing to my 401K so I’m also late in the game for that too.

Let’s say you have two young, high income partners in a couple who want to buy a house together but don’t really care to get married. They already live together in an apartment but both want to move to a house to build equity and have a yard, not share walls, etc. Should one partner buy the house and the other pays rent until they get married, or should they get a mortgage together without being married? I realize there isn’t a “right” answer but I’m interested in people’s experiences here.
