I make $225k as a mid-level associate in NYC and somehow still feel broke. Between $3k/month rent, $1,100/month in loan payments, taxes, and ordering takeout because I don’t have time to cook...I blink and my paycheck is gone. I know it’s a high income on paper, but it doesn’t feel like wealth when I’m stressed about savings and can’t even imagine affording a place to buy. Is this just what being a lawyer in a big city looks like, or am I doing something wrong?

Welcome to golden handcuffs. They pay you just enough to keep you grinding, but not enough to ever feel free—especially in cities that bleed you dry.

like

This is exactly it

I’ll also add: review and take advantage of all possible firm benefits (assuming you actually qualify for them). I didn’t use my firm’s after-hours meal allowance for the first year, even though I was regularly working late, and would spend my own $ on takeout when I got home. There may be small but recurring expenses you can eliminate by making work responsible for them.

Consider moving some where else in the tri state and working remote or somewhere you can commute from. Living in Manhattan or Brooklyn as a single person is sure fire way to feel broke on a great salary.

You would be broke in Miami too. Try doing that on what firms want to pay legal assistants these days.

Same feeling here, but in Chicago. Gets worse when you have kids. $2,600 per month, per kid just for daycare ($5,200 total) and *poof* there’s nothing left to eat.

Either: 1) move to a cheaper city or 2) join biglaw.

One can also consider moving to a cheaper city or joining biglaw. Simply offering options.

Ah its the same for all of us.

What happened to the other$7k?

Only 3K for rent in NYC? Surely you have a roommate !! The fact that you probably have a roommate makes the situation EVEN WORSE !

Yea bc it’s nyc. Duh. State and city tax plus everything is more expensive. Get out of nyc

What you’re doing wrong is living in New York. Get out while you can.

News coming in i have just seen one person writing in some cts bowl that the new internet reimbursement model is put on hold and we will be receiving 1800 this month too,,is it true? Can someone throw light on this and enlight me by telling whether this is true or just a fake one

I just hit my lean fire number but am hesitating to pull the trigger, so was hoping to run it by people smarter than me:

- I have a few rentals that bring in ~$1800/mo cash flow, taxes are negligible, Capex incl.
- My paper assets will bring in ~$1200/mo at 3% draw
- I get free Healthcare at the VA
- No plans on kids
- My expenses haven't topped $30k/yr ever
- I could always reenter the workforce if needed (albeit probably not in consulting)

Please point out the flaws here, what am I missing?

Hi all, healthcare question here. I read all the materials about both plans but I’m still not really sure which one is better for me - it seems like the difference comes down to co-pays and the HSA. Any advice or insight is welcome.
