All these people are trying to set you off the hunt. To become firm leadership you must first seek a blade that can slay your immortal foes. Legend has it this will require you to one day forge the blade in the blood of your most cherished client. So you must go down the path of building a deep and lasting client relationship now, knowing in your heart you must one day betray them for your ambition.
Blade in hand, you must still face an array of opponents, each will require you to have mastered a different skill. You must master the Eastern Agile Hawk style, the 2x2 matrix mountain style, the PMO puma style, and the AI tornado style. Each fallen master of their style will grant you an infinity stone to affix to your blade.
Finally, you will face your CEO in one on one combat. Recall, this is an individual who overcame the same challenges as you. But they are tired of the mantle of leadership and you must overcome their craftiness with your youthful energy. Harness the dark side of the force and strike them down with all your hatred and ambition. Only then will you rise to power.
We do not speak of this. This is sacred knowledge reserved for the special few. Your broke the code, BCG1. Ready your weapon and prepare to die by my nunchucks!
You’re already coming off as naive. Let work speak for itself.
I would suggest mastering each step of your journey. You will make it organically if you have the right set of skills under your belt. Future goals are good but don’t let it heavily impact your journey.
Great goal!
I agree with P1 and D2. Focus on mastering today and progressing up the ladder. Always do the right thing, always watch out for the team and people. The biggest mistake I see people make both professionally and personally is running forward without looking what happens to the sides of you.
Not sure I would share that ambition publicly this early in your career. I think you would get more shit for it than anything helpful.
Aren’t firm leaders also partners? One follows the other. Focus on doing great work, learning and building the capability set to be a great partner - the leadership opportunities will naturally follow.
Focus on doing your work well today. Partner and leadership is a long way away. Develop a reputation as a very strong SC. That’s your job today.
I think it’s a worthwhile goal . I also think it’s incredibly stupid to let it be known to anyone till you are at least a first year partner .
What you may not realize as a senior is that you may not actually want to be in the leadership role after you make partner . It’s not exactly a fun role .
Take care of your people and your client . That will get you to Partner . You can decide at that point which way to head
So you came to a consulting firm to be an administrator? Like saying you joined a football team because you want to coach.
You make a very good point. I guess I made an assumption that you can join firm leadership by working your way up the ranks. I looked at the US CEOs of all 4, and each of them started their careers with the firms they now lead in a client/service delivery role. So I guess my question should have had two parts: 1) CAN I learn the skills necessary to lead a firm by working for a firm, and 2) if yes, what should I focus on while working to make me a better candidate. I guess if the answer is no, what job outside of the firm provides better foundation in your opinion? I like your feedback so I’m genuinely interested in what you think the best path is.
I know I need to network, develop my brand, and sell work. But I don’t know if telling my network my secret ambitions is a good idea? Don’t want to come off as pompous or full of myself given how difficult it is to make partner.
