I need a structural engineer to evaluate if my home is still habitable after a tornado. It costs $500+ per visit to get these evaluations. If I have 2-3 people come out, can I get these fees reimbursed by insurance?

Sorry you're going through this. Make a folder on Google docs (or whatever your preferred platform is) and save EVERY receipt related to the tornado. Hotel rooms / bottles of water / emergency contractors / etc. Home owners insurance is broad and u can get a lot of stuff covered but it'll take awhile.

Why isn’t your insurance company doing this?

Depends on insurance policy but likely yes. I assume you've already made the claim? Reach out to your agent and discuss.

I’m in this business to cure my inferiority complex. Making lots of money, working with fortune 500 clients and walking the streets of NYC with a suit, tie and briefcase makes me feel important and worthy.

I often wish I could be like my law school friends who either moved to small towns or have public sector or non profit jobs, wear sweaters and jeans to work and make far less than me, but are happy with their lives, feel a sense of meaning with their work and don’t need external validation.

I'm early in my career, managed to save $30K to invest, and want to get my hands dirty with a rental property without too much risk (e.g. no HML/flipping). It sounds like that's a tall order in the NY/CT area given the prices, not to mention whether I'd be able to get a mortgage on anything below $100K, but I figure I'll give it a shot anyway. Any advice on what you might do in my position? Am I being crazy with this idea?

Due to a family situation we are looking to move to a different state. Normally we would sell our current home and buy a new home in our new location. However, with todays prices and interest, will it make more sense to rent out our current home and rent a home ourselves vs. selling and buying immediately when we move? We are moving from Vegas to Sacramento and we are not sure how long we would stay in the new area. Thoughts?
