Top-of-Mind Thoughts
The design business is tough right now. The promise—or maybe the delusion—of AI has created major disruption.
As someone who reviews portfolios and makes hiring decisions, here’s my advice:
Join professional organizations
AIGA Austin is a good example. People hire people they know. Build relationships and become someone everyone recognizes.
Build a strong portfolio
This may sound harsh, but ask yourself honestly: Is my work better than something someone could create with Canva or AI? Designers who only produce at a basic, production level will struggle to stand out.
Specialize
Develop deep expertise in a specific industry—music, fashion, technology, food and beverage. Specialization is a powerful differentiator.
Be a strategic problem-solver
Brains are in demand. Hands can be replaced by cheaper labor or automated tools. The ability to think critically and solve problems will set you apart.
You need to make your own career. Dont sit around waiting for someone to hire you

It's tough in general right now. Some of the best things you could probably keep doing in addition to applying is trying to network and if you don't have work for existing companies rather, you could try to work and build up a portfolio of work. I've gotten some success from creating small, relatively low lift pitches (although this isn't ideal since I don't prefer to do work for free) to try to get attention from people at companies I have an interest in
🤙 don’t graduate high, amiright? market is shit. bunch of us right there with you.
It’s not you it’s them. You do need to be humble and hungry but sounds like you already are. What about in person social networking?
Are you applying for internships? Most people (myself included) started out this way. It’s not just about what you learn but who you meet. They will see you working and solving real world problems, get to know you and like you. Then they’ll find a way to hire you in a full time role and you’ll never look back. Sometimes it takes a few internships in different companies before you find your home.
It’s tough out there! I teach portfolio class at a university and I encourage my students to do as someone mentioned above… join AIGA, AAF or similar local design groups. Network. Network. Network. Tell everyone what you do. Carry business cards or even postcards with your work and contact info. Portfolio should be top notch. Show your best pieces up front/top, dedicated page for each project. Show final solutions and process, sketches, etc. Gear your work towards the design industry you want to work in. Make sure you’re using the right keywords for your resume (run it through ChatGPT). Unfortunately your resume is probably being reviewed by AI before it even gets to a person. I was on the hunt for a 2nd design job. It was tough. 85 applications in 6 weeks. I got 2 responses and landed 1. It wasn’t easy. Very frustrating. In 3-4 months you should have 200+ applications out there already. AI is here to stay but the good agencies and companies still value human design knowledge and creativity. I wouldn’t let that discourage you. It’s a tool. I know Austin is your goal but be open to remote or moving if you can. Take what you can get until you get what you want. Be encouraged. Keep at it!!!
At the moment whole design world is adapting to new industry standards and also adjusting with worldwide economic condition. Lots of companies has open vacancies but maybe just %5 of them are real and there is a job after it. Most of the companies just collecting CV and Portfolio but do nothing. Cause entrance of the Machine Learning thin, nobody know what to do at the moment. But even in this state, if you are specialist for anything you have a chance. And the design market is Global Scale, you do not compete with your neighbor but world. Thats mean there is no just 10 candidate but 1000 of them, this also make everything harder for each candidate.
My advice for you to keep applying with the same energy but in the mean time, try to focus on one specific specialty that makes you different and seperate you from other designers.
Also push your portfolio to good state, but also try to make some connections around and try to talk or connect with other designers who working in The companies you like. Get some design advices, its better if you have someone inside.
Goodluck
I agree with the comments above and have one other thought. You should consider working in other markets. You mentioned you want to work in Austin. If you chose a few other good design cities you increase your chances. If you want a brutally honest critique of your work you can use JPL’s free resources. It not only helps you know how to objectively review your work but also gives tips on getting the right job. Https://jobpropulsionlab.com/free-resources
