Sounds like they just want an excuse to pay you less.

Is it a prestigious/high end boutique or is it just a midlaw firm?
Taking a class cut seems BS unless youre retooling. Going to a smaller/less prestigious firm means they should be giving you a class year to represent your additional experience/reps over the other associates.
I agree with the others, this just seems like a way to pay you less. If theyre concerned about runway to partner then why can't you spend another year as a max yr associate or a counsel?
It’s about setting you up for long term success at the firm. It’s not about the firm trying to be cheap. When would you be up for partnership consideration? They might think you’ll need an extra year to build relationships. Is there any difference in your current practice and what you’ll be doing at the new firm?
lame. going from v10 to boutique is bs imo; maybe if v10 to some other reputable big law firm…
7th year. They are lockstep if that makes any sort of difference. Though I do tend to agree with the comments so far.

Yes. It’s a gift. Take it.

A7, yes it is indeed still a thing at some firms, including in lit. I personally wouldn’t want to go to those firms for the reasons you say given that many firms don’t do that, but it does still exist.
