I mean it is hard for us to give you specifics - not knowing the client or work - when specifics are what you need. I’d ask for those specifics, not in a confrontational way, but with the caveat that you are looking to get better.
Otherwise, I’d study the brand book, and potentially even use one on one time with your manager to go through past work and discuss what made it successful. If you position these requests through the lens of wanting to improve and optimize, they should be more than receptive and accommodating to your efforts.

Thank you for this meaningful comment!

If you’re freelancing in-house brand-side, it sounds like they’re looking for you to abdicate the freelancer mindset and undergo the same cultish lobotomy as if you were a fulltime employee.
Example:
Open on your manager holding up the latest, SUPER-AMAZING IKEA catalogue:
MANAGER: Tell me about these umlauts.
YOU: Those umlauts aren’t JUST “umlauts.” They’re points marking a level of improvement that every IKEA employee should be striving for!

Hahaha. The same takeaway applies though.
Learn to fluently pronounce words with umlauts, refine your recipes for side dishes that go with meatballs, and ask these questions directly to your manager.
Also wouldn’t hurt to be handy with an Allen wrench.
