I received an offer from Deloitte and now they are asking me for my SSN as part of the background check form. It says “if you have an SSN, you must provide it”. Is that normal? Should I refuse?

Deloitte isn’t looking to steal your identity buddy just provide it

Normal. I’ve had that asked in every background check

like

This is standard for every background check. Were you planning to also refuse if they hypothetically become your employer? Because that wouldn’t go over well

You'd also need to provide it anyway for them to pay taxes on you behalf, generate your W2 etc.

You must be young. Every background check requires a SSN.

You don’t have to provide SSN if you are ok with getting the offer rescinded, offers are contingent based on your background check.

SSN is needed to (1) verify employment eligibility, (2) criminal history at county, state and national level, and (3) verify if the SSN provided is fake or real.

like

Why would you refuse ?

Do you have more context as to why they think it’s a red flag?

There’s a big difference between requesting your SSN for a background check vs up front before you interview, for example.

Normal. Every employer background check would need ssn.

Absolutely not. No background check requires a SSN. It’s a lazy way of confirming your identity. They can do the same with your address history. At best, only provide the last 4 digits. I would ask them to provide their’s in exchange, including the management team. SSN are not to be used for anything other than tax id. Just tell them you are not comfortable giving the number outside of a tax situation.

P1, you’re allowed to respond without your tin foil hat on.

funny

They need your SSN to check your credit history. Credit checks are part of the background check.

Your SSN is tied to your credibility in life.

And we wonder why we are so comfortable with identity theft and cyber crime. It is completely false that SSN is required for credit checks, etc. Last 4 digits is sufficient. It just costs a bit more and takes a little more time to confirm identify. Many states require that SSN be kept separate from employment applications. Stop volunteering private information about yourself when it really isn’t needed.

This is boomer mentality.
