Defer your start date or request a signing bonus of 100%, 75%, or 50% or whatever you can get. But if you are anxious to leave, the bonus will not make much difference in terms of your annual salary and career salary in the end.
Can you defer your start date (or at least your notice date) until after you receive your bonus. Alternatively - explain the situation to New Firm and request that they make you whole; I did this successfully when I lateralled.
Yea. I think so too and also that they will be receptive to the conversation. After all, most everyone is in biglaw for the $; some level of self interest is understandable.
Is it improper for me to cite this as a basis for requesting a higher base salary? Any experience here would be appreciated. If it makes a difference, the bonus is around $15K

Is your new firm lockstep? Either way, I doubt you will get this as a higher base, but good chance you can get it as a signing bonus. If not lockstep, worth a try asking for it as higher base and when they say no ask for it as a signing bonus.
Correct. Remember that bonuses get taxed at almost 50%, so a $15k bonus is only really $7.5k at most.
