First, just because you do the same job doesn't mean that you have the same experience, and they may have been a better negotiator than you. That's simply the case. With my current employer I negotiated another 9k on top of their offer.
Second, do not tell your manager that you know about anyone's salary. Your co-worker shouldn't have been talking about, and if you found out in any other manner, then that may start looking a little suspicious about what data you have access to, or if you access something you weren't supposed to.
Negotiate only on your merits. It will help if you know the salary scale, and where you are in that scale. You will need to justify the merit based increase based on your achievements. Do you volunteer first when there is extra work presented to your team? Those sorts of things. Are you performing highly? What's the metric you're using to justify that.
