I recently started this new job as a “waitress” I’m still under 18 and am supposed to be doing part time here .it was really amazing here and I had been loving it so much until things started going wrong as I was put to work for almost a full week and worked up to 11 hours on a day all the way until 11.30pm which is illegal for a minor I took off two days of that week as I’ve really been struggling with my physical health but my manager has now called me for a chat this week. What should I do?

Did your manager share the purpose of the meeting? It could be routine or related to your role, but either way, it’s a good opportunity to prepare. Be ready to discuss your boundaries and what you're comfortable with. Make sure to communicate clearly how much you're able to take on without compromising your health or violating any labor regulations.

When you do have this meeting with your boss, you should use it as an opportunity to start setting good boundaries and standing up for yourself in the workplace. You should not be working that late, and you are working too many hours. If he can't respect that, you may want to consider quitting.

like

Just talk about how much you love the job but that you can’t work that many hours. I think it’s really important to speak up and say the things that are important to you (like the number of hours you work).

Looks like no one gave you a real informative answer - What you're describing is exactly how our restaurant industry works. Managers will push your schedule, push your hours, push you, and then sit you down and act like you did something wrong. Our industry always over works and never respects scheduling, and most managers manipulate you and your wellbeing if you ever try to stick up for yourself. The common workday is 10 hours which is Bs and sometimes they will schedule you 7 shifts. If this is happening to you, leave before you go crazy. But find work first before you leave

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.

So I work as an assistant manager at a restaurant for the past 9 months. I've worked in restaurants for the past 6 years science I was 16. Now I'm 22. I went to a trade school for media and film. I got a dream opportunity to work in the field making about the same or 10% more. I told myself the only reason I'd leave this company is for this type of job. Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?

Should I try to negotiate a raise or look for other opportunities?
