It’s everywhere. Partners and hiring manager at my old firm hired a waitress at their local drinking hole. The former waitress is now head of operations and hiring. Lots of interesting problems and close calls as a result of that decision over the years.

I don’t think you can fully beat that system by just grinding harder, but you can protect yourself by making your contributions visible, building your own relationships, and looking for places where your work actually gets recognized.
Does management kniow what you have done to correct this issue? If no then you need to tell someone how you wente the extra mile, otherwise you only have yourself to blame.
Keep working hard and doing good work and you’ll both be found out - you in a good way and them in a bad way. Connections and nepotism helps you at the start of your career but much much less so as your career develops
you have to stop fixing his mistakes, and let the blame fall where it should. You will continue to be in this position is he is not forced to carry his own weight.
