I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

I prefer the office. Remote was fine during covid, and my job allows 2 of my 4 days (4x10) to be remote, but I still come in most days. One of the engineers I work with said it today, I come to the office for peace. Home he has wife/kids/dog.. lots of distractions from the workday.
That’s actually sad

Was 8 years WFH and back hybrif. I think the hardest part of the office is pretending to look productive for a full day. 😂

That I get. I only worked from the office for two years of my career. When I was just starting out, I didn’t even know what to do half the day. I’m busy now but then I used to chat online half the day. 😂
When I’m in an office, I have to “be on” the entire time I’m there. Being neurodivergent, this is exhausting. There’s also a lot of stimuli coming at me which can also be overwhelming. Now yes, things like noise-canceling headphones help, but there’s several other factors. All this after I just drove 45+ minutes. It’s hard. All that being said, I do miss the social aspect of the office and working from home is incredibly lonely. I need to get a dog.
Exactly this, as AuDHD, I spend all day masking so when I get home I’m totally overwhelmed by the constant noise bright lights, chatter and over stimulation.
It's definitely not a matter of being spoiled. I think there are a few things at play here:
1. Office setups are different than they used to be. The current trend is open concept, and this is very hard for a lot of people when it comes to being able to focus and be productive. Especially for Neurodivergent people.
2. When people never had a choice before, they didn't realize how taxing the commutes, social overstimulation, and constant interruptions really were. Once we were able to experience something better (for those of us that do prefer to wfh), it became very tough to go back. Once the nervous system finally gets to relax and heal, it feels scary to put yourself back into a situation where your anxiety is heightened again.
My opinion is that if a job is one that can be done from home, employees should always have the option based on how they work and perform best. Otherwise, it's just the same issue of corporate environments forcing all different types of people to work the same way. It's not beneficial. Have an office space for those that prefer it, and I think it's even ok to require 1-2x per week from everyone if there's a good reason! But there's no reason why employees that work in jobs that can just as easily be done from home should be required to go in more than 2x per week. "Collaboration and team building" can be done on those days.....it doesn't require more than that.
I think what’s happened is that people work much harder at home as there isn’t too much of a separation between lunch or snack time.
Most of the time in the office it becomes a social either a water cooler chat which lasts too long or a coffee break which ends up becoming a catch up, not much gets done.
Pro
I used to think that but when I posted about people eating lunch on camera people seemed irate meetings were scheduled at “lunch time,”
It is harder to get a room for a meeting compared to pre-COVID, and in-office benefits have been cut back. Then add inflation out-pacing wage growth, and we have less buying power but are expected to eat the time/financial costs of commuting to an office with fewer benefits and an inability to take a meeting somewhere quiet.
Pro
I don’t think inflation is outpacing inflation. I get the second part, but I don’t think that’s a fact.
The only people that like to work in the office are the ones with no friends/love life and/or no hobbies

Okay wow, projection much??? What an absolutely dumb take. 😂😂😂😂
If you've been giving your kids their favorite candy, then all of sudden tell them, "No more candy," the kids are going to cry and throw a temper tantrum. Bought on due to COVID shutdown, working from home was the "candy."
Not to be personal, let’s hear from you, in terms why do feel this way?
I think people got spoiled working from home (I did). Commuting was never fun, but I didn’t know anything else until I worked from home for 5 years
RTO is mostly pointless. I’m the only one on my team in my office and we’re all scattered across the country
I prefer the office personally but mine isn’t crazy crowded. It’s super mellow.
WFH is a struggle now with 2 really little kids. So my issue is the opposite of someone people. The office is quieter and less distracting.
Im ADHD and need as little noise as possible around me. Also, being at home all day everyday just gives me cabin fever.
