I’m about to start an internship at IBM for UX Research. I’m super excited about it, and was wondering if anyone could tell me about the design culture there or how the company is for designers? Get to know the team better, or at least the people who you are managing. Helps build trust, clarity, and understanding. It may feel like its costing you more time upfront, but by getting to know them a bit more personally, it will help build a stronger team. Also ask the team on their thoughts (where applicable), when providing direction or assigning tasks.
Make sure you are liked by the team first. Be supportive, engaging and vulnerable in front of them. When you are direct / harsh with them it will go down better. Also let them know why you are being that way and the consequences to you if things go sideways. Don’t try desi management style of bullying people - it’s horrible and you won’t get anywhere. You want to build followership.
Agreed with SM1. I echo letting them know why you are this way and the consequences to you/team if things were to go other way.
Pro
1) Ask questions instead giving directions.
e.g. ‘Can you please do this?’ Instead of ‘Do this’

the best way to avoid any brutal arguments and cause any emotional distress is to be an unsullied, work as part of a slave army and put this slogan in your mind "Your wish is my command"
