I spent my entire lunch break advocating for a patient with an insurance company and I’m more exhausted than if I’d just worked the floor. Dealing with prior authorizations is the most soul-crushing part of modern medicine and no one warned me about it in school. I’m a clinician, not a negotiator for a multi-billion dollar corporation. At what point did admin work become the primary job of a healthcare provider?

What is the responsibility of an OB hospitalist to advocate for or against sterilization (specifically tubal litigation) if any? Our employee satisfaction survey is tied to our performance goals. Meaning, if we rate management badly, we cannot meet 10% of our goals which in turn affects our bonuses and raises. How would you handle not getting a lunch break when you are a salaried employee treating patients for 40 hours a week? I don’t get documentation time either, but all notes are to be completed the same day. Some of us have reached out to HR and we’re told to discuss it with the regional director, but the regional director says we’d have to come in early or leave late to block out a lunch break. My commute is an hour each way, so I’d prefer not to make my day any longer. Advice?
