I spent three hours at a Bar Association mixer last night, and I’ve never felt more like a hollow shell of a human being. It’s all just trading business cards and asking the same question until your voice goes hoarse. Is there a way to do this that doesn't feel like you're selling your soul one cocktail at a time?

There's an art to working the room. You just have to move on if a conversation is going nowhere. And ideally you may develop a rapport with a few people with whom you'll stay in touch. If it isn't happening, just make a speedy exit, no need to spend three hours in the company of stiffs.

This is just standard corporate world… not unique to law

Yeah, the way to do these without utterly wasting your time is you need to arrive a few minutes early and stay a few minutes after it’s over and aim to make genuine connections with only 2-3 people over the course of the evening. Then, over the following days, send email follow ups to those couple people, inviting them to coffee, sharing little insights relevant to their practices, etc. so you stay top of mind and begin to develop a mutually beneficial professional relationship.

Resigned from my job for blatant racism last week. Been a contingent worker for 6 months. The manager that recruited me unfortunately left after a couple weeks and went to another company. She however recommended me for the permanent opportunity to higher management. The acting manager came in, permanent role was posted, I applied, interviewed……manager told me they chose someone else external for the role. I could sense the manager had no intentions to hire me permanently
