I would imagine your manager is prob some 24 year old media planner with poor management skills.
Yes, I would kindly talk to your manager and let them know that you're here and ready to learn, and that as long as you give feedback to you respsctfully, you'll be receptive to it.
Going to HR without speaking to you first was a cowardly move on their part.
Seems like a red flag, best case if just with regards to their communication ability, worst case they might have made up their mind about you. If it were me, I would message your manager and say that [HR lady] mentioned something about [new feedback] and you would like to discuss when they have a moment. Give them a chance to tell you themselves, otherwise I would be weary..
Ahah whoops! Thanks.
Chief
I'm sure you're already thinking the worst, so I don't want to bum you out. But get back into job search mode and try to hop before you get a 10 minute check-in on your calendar in 2 months. They're starting a paper trail, and there's a good chance there's something going on that you wouldn't and won't be made aware of.
I just want to say thank you to everyone who has inputted! I have talked to other mentors and they also feel I’m being set up rn. Talking to my manager to see what’s really going on and will determined my next step from there.
yes.
I would be concerned. That’s terrible management and setting you up to take a fall if anything ever goes wrong.
Agree with the comments above. Would add that if HR is talking to you after one month, that is quite early enough on that they are mentioning something to you. And you should be on alert. Sure, this would be better coming from your manager, but the feedback is coming, and coming quite early enough on (the way you write it makes it seem like you’ve been having 1x1’s for a year, and this is your first hearing of it. But 1 month is nothing. You’re still within the probationary period). If HR is checking in with you this early on, it means you’re not hitting the marks as expected. And this is the first step in them saying it’s not working out.
You could still turn it around, depending on what the feedback was exactly.
So I just switched from media to strategy and HR lady told me she heard that my thinking isn’t where they thought it would be
It does sound like they are starting a “paper trail”. But bigger picture it’s messed up that when you switch disciplines they don’t give you time and support to get up to speed. What is their plan for bringing you along?
They gave me my proficiency planner to show the skills I should be developing within the next year . I need to be intermediate in each section. I hvnt even set my goals yet. I’m suppose to be doing that next week. They told me in the interview to let me learn and develop as a junior brand planner.
Not a good sign, you need to be extremely open and honest with your manager about concerns, expectations and timelines. They need to lay out for you exactly their expectations and goals for your learning and growth. In writing.
As for the thinking part, strategy is about understanding the brand, it’s differentiation, how it fits and stands out, the competition, the market, overall economy factors and overall consumer trends and behaviors. Media is just the vehicle to deliver the strategy and idea. Think strategy first.
It also might just be they think you are not a good fit culture and personality wise.
I feel like it’s a not living up to their expectations if they are saying my thinking isn’t where they thought it would be
Yes. Very.
