I was a workaholic until my health started to deteriorate due to stress that I ended up going to the ER several times due to acute conditions that still impacts me today (it’s been a year). It’s hard to rewire our brain to something that feels like the complete opposite of hustle culture, something that is so deeply instilled in us in a capitalistic society. A few things that helped me were reframing and putting myself and loved ones first. I had a strict “no-reply” policy for anything that happens after 5pm. I started spending more time on my hobbies, seeing friends, going on dates with my partner, hanging out with my dog…the best way for me was just to start doing (ie. taking time off occasionally, having better boundaries with work, etc.)
Rest is always necessary for anyone to be at their best - you have to put the oxygen mask on yourself first. You’re also more than just a productive members of society; ie. you’re a sibling, a partner, a grandchild, a parent, a household manager, and most importantly you’re in the driver seat - no one can be in those roles in your life but you. In the grand scheme of things, what you do for a living is just a small portion of your life. You are worth more than what you produce. If you haven’t already, starting using those PTO days to do things you enjoy! Go see friends/family, go on dates with your partner, go out into the nature etc.
The memories of the quality time you spend with yourself and/or loved ones are worth far more than any job. You are valuable :)
I get that. I've got a really hard time ending the day feeling like I didn't accomplish anything during it. My girlfriend has been on my case to give myself more credit for the things I take for granted, and as much as I thought it sounded like feel good nonsense, there is merit to it. Doesn't have to be any major accomplishment, just something you can look back on and give yourself credit for doing - finally sending that email, cleaning up your calendar, even doing laundry. Give it a try tomorrow. I guarantee you're getting a lot more done than you're giving yourself credit for.
