It's interesting to know that the numbers indicated that the AI tool was perceptive. I suppose it could identify things that our own eyes might miss. It does seem quite dystopian, however. It feels like my robot will square off against a potential employer's robot, and may the best robot win. What a world.
I don't necessarily think it's that the AI notices something you'd miss. It's more that a resume screening model is just generally going to give higher marks to a resume formatted a certain way or that uses certain words, so submitting a resume an AI model thinks is good is more important these days tham formatting your resume in a way that catches the attention of a person with experience in your office.
For example, AI models don't like resumes formatted with a nice looking but complex design because that's harder for them to parse. But a person would have no problem reading such a resume and may even give it bonus points for originality in fields that prioritize art skills. AI will also be trained to look for specific words as evidence of quality, and may not know or consider a lot of synonyms for those words, whereas a human looking at a resume may not have such a strict preference over your word choice if it's clear through your descriptions that you've done the work they're looking for. Etc. What the model is trained on will also substantially affect the quality of the resumes the model ranks highly/why it does so
The whole hiring process was shit to begin with. It’s shit now. Use all the tools you can to stand out!
I know. It’s hard to predict the future
I hate, with a passion, that this is what we've become. We are people working with people and for people, yet everything gets filtered through something ridiculously non-human and we give it all control. It makes sense why it would work, though. The AI knows what the AI is going to be looking for.
Pro
This summer, I attended a job search seminar where the speaker predicted that resumes would be obsolete in 10 years. Instead, ai would be used to match candidates to open roles and could even be used to poach qualified candidates.
I'm a bit skeptical because it removes our ability to shape our own careers and would make it even harder for us to make career changes but I also think I overestimate how much control the average person has over their career trajectory.
In the future, it will be AI versus AI everywhere
I feel like this is going to happen or is already happening in education, too. Teachers and profs are using AI to create and grade assignments, students are using it to do said assignments.
Yes, AI vs AI
Funny. I just updated my resume and had AI review it compared to the job posting to then give me suggestions on how to best tailor it for higher chance of call back. i guess I’ll know for sure soon enough if it worked or not.
