Do it. Your happiness is pretty damn important. The money will come later. Maybe you can ask for a little more for this move? Then ask for a review in 6-12 months. Go, take the job.

Nice. Take it and don’t look back.
And by same position, I mean same title! I’m currently in pharma right now and not happy at all, so this would be moving back to consumer based in all different industries (consumer goods, CPG, education).
Take it. Counter your offer by a few thousand. If they can’t do it ask for more vacation time and a formal review 6 months in for salary increase.
Exactly. Get out of pharma before it's too late. Plenty of time for titles and pay down the road.
I’ve taken the lateral move. For the same pay, I wouldn’t do it. For more money, it could be an okay decision.
The thing is, many agencies won’t promote or give a raise for a year. So unless you’re cool spending at least another year at your level/salary, I would reconsider.
This. I would consider one year the MINIMUM you should expect to stay at this title/salary after you start, with two years being more realistic. If you’re truly all right earning the same amount two years from now, go for it. Otherwise you should be negotiating for whatever you’d feel good about still making in 2023.
I always think that career trumps money at your level. I’ve posted this a number of times on FB and I get a lot of, “Money doesn’t mean much to an SVP!” But I wasn’t an SVP my whole career.
If you don’t position yourself now to work at the agencies you want to work for and doing the work you’d prefer to be doing it’s WAY harder to do it later in your career. Sure, a $10K bump is life changing when you’re not making a ton of money, but if you invest in you now, the rest will come down the road.
If this is truly a great opportunity I would take it.
That said, it really can’t hurt to ask if the job could be made into an SAE role. We do things like that all the time (both up and down) and a lot of people don’t know that. Also, you can negotiate comp too. If you do it respectfully it doesn’t mean they’ll pull the offer.
Personally, I would be honest with them and tell them how you’re feeling. If they really want you they might be able to make it work.
Being an account person, lateral move means new clients. If you keep good acquaintance with former client people, in a new agency you win new clients to network with, useful for your future in any direction (new agency, found your own shop, shift clien-side...)
Smart.
I was in a similar situation when I was at your level. Can they really not just call you a senior account executive? I could see them saying you’re not ready for account supervisor. But what about senior AE? What difference would it make to them? Either way I definitely think you should make the switch and get out of pharma. The title thing isn’t going to matter in the long run. I’m just annoyed I didn’t push more myself when this was me, but I understand when you’re junior you feel you don’t have much leverage.
I don’t think there’s harm in asking. You have the experience to back it up. Just say you’re excited about the opportunity but you’d really like to be an SAE given your years of experience. You don’t know what the politics are going to be when you get in there, like other people are saying. It could become a whole thing like oh no one is getting promotions this year because of covid and then you end up at AE level for another year or longer. It’s not just about this job it’s about the one after this job. But yeah, get out of pharma sooner rather than later because I feel as a junior you might get sucked into that vortex if you don’t get out sooner rather than later.
Appreciate all of the insight!! It’s super helpful to hear from you all, so thank you!
Better agency? Then yes. Easy.
.
Do it!! I did the same thing this year and am so much happier.
I just had to make a very similar decision. I’m now with my dream agency and super excited for the opportunity!
A lateral bump now doesn’t always mean you’ll be in that position/at that pay. With that being said, I think you have a shot at adjusting your title if you just ask. It may not mean a lot to them, but it may mean everything to you when you try to make a move later on.
Update! I was able to get a $4k bump (I know not much, but at least a little bit!) and a 6 month salary and position review in my contract. Thanks for the help, suggestions, etc!
Well done!
