1. Assess the reality of the situation:
* Have other people at your company or department successfully completed PIPs?
* Is the plan specific and measurable?
* Does your manager seem invested in helping you improve?
* Are you receiving coaching, resources, and feedback?
2. Document everything
As a manager, when I put someone on a PIP it’s rarely bc I want them gone. I just want a documented, structured way to help them improve their performance. If what they’re asking is realistically something you think you can accomplish, stick it out. I’ve written PIPs for employees who turned out to be rockstars.
That's all well and good, but having been through several RIFs, those on or with history of PIPs are typically first to populate the list.
I generally advise looking for a new opportunity once you are put on a PIP, but not to quit until you line something up
I highly recommend trying to overcome it. Leaders have PIPs for a reason and most leaders sincerely want to help you improve. Overcoming it will also help your confidence if you’re second-guessing yourself now. Engage, build your relationships, be receptive to the feedback, and integrate it into your work. You were hired for a reason and I believe most employees can work through their PIP and end up more successful as a result. You got this!
What was the reason for your PIP? That can make a huge difference.
PIPs are a nightmare!! I was on one with Allstate…but pushed through WHILE looking for another opportunity. I’m thankful for the new opportunity and I no longer have to deal with Allstate. I do hope you can push through and continue to look for a new opportunity in the meantime.
Managers say they don’t want you gone. BS!!! THEY want you gone!
