One month does not sound right.
Severance is definitely not negotiable. 1 week for every year is pretty standard, though I've seen better (2 weeks base, plus a week per year). Definitely have never seen a month per year though.

IPG told me it wasn't negotiable.
It depends on the situation, and it can be negotiable. Depends on why you're being let go, and whether you have any leverage.
The paper you sign when you accept severance usually indemnifies the company from future claims. If there's a real possibility that you could file a harassment or discrimination lawsuit, they're more willing to negotiate.
If they're eliminating your position because they don't want to go through the rigamarole of firing you for cause, it's not negotiable. Same for a legit revenue based layoff.
Norm is definitely not one month.
One month for every year does not happen. Not standard, as any HR person will confirm. That's magical thinking.
Severance definitely IS negotiable... unless you signed something already. Google will give you some good sample conversations about this but as someone mentioned, it definitely depends on the reasons you were let go. I think a week for every year isn't crazy low but there is usually a 6-week minimum.
It doesn't mean anything if you don't have it in writing.
Norm is 2 weeks per year. And they can cap it if they want if you've been there for say, 15 years. This means they can give you 12 weeks instead of 30. Sucks.
