I went to Home Depot to buy 3 boxes and was last in a 6 person line at self check out. Customer service had 3 employees standing around POS systems so I went over to ask to be checked out and they gave me pretty serious attitude at first. My local grocery store is kind of like that too. Anyone else’s experience?

I'm not defending anyone, but most retail employees are not trained to run registers. Additionally, opening a register usually requires a manager type who may not have been in the group you encountered.
On a related note, anytime I want an actual cashier in a big box hardware store, I head to the lumber section where there is always a cashier.

Yes! I don’t like to use self check out in general, but was forced to use it at Costco a couple weeks ago. The lady yelled at me for using the hand scanner instead of unloading the cart. She told me I can only use the hand scanner for anything too heavy to lift, so I said I’ll just go back to the line. It wasn’t too busy and I wasn’t in a hurry, but she insisted that I learn the correct way and literally talked to me like I had no brain while showing me how to scan the items and place them onto the other section when I was done. Unfortunately for her, I learned nothing and she scanned all my items for me. So, I won anyway! Haha!

Costco is the worst. They have basically turned into the DMV or any other government office.

I avoid the self checkouts just because I don't like them on principle. But I've never had a problem going to them, they're usually empty and the manned checkout lanes have lines. I'll do the self checkout if I'm not buying anything complicated, if it's one or two items it's not a big deal. I always feel weird though, I'll be doing the transaction and someone from the store will be standing there staring at me like I'm trying to cheat them.

I don't use self checkout. It takes away people's jobs. Just something to think about.

What are you going to do when all you have is self check out? I live in a rural area and our local store just finished renovating and placed 10 more self check outs for a total of 20 self checkout stations and reduced the human check outs to 2.

like

Yes. I go elsewhere and sometimes call them out on X or Threads. Calling them out on this forum is unlikely to have any effect.

I’ve usually had the opposite experience. The staff are bored sitting around and begging me to come to them to give them something to do.

I've worked at the customer service desk of another home improvement store. It has been my experience that sometimes we are instructed not to process normal purchases. Sometimes the systems don't have that function at Customer Service. That being said, they should not have given you an attitude.

I’m not a Boomer. I hate self checkouts. Why should I work for a store and get nothing in return?

This platform is for professional networking and career-related discussions not your retail venting. Perhaps Facebook or a local community group would be a better fit for this type of post.

I appreciate your apology, but the main issue remains, this platform is meant for sharing professional insights and experiences, not turning it into a Facebook-style rant forum. When personal negativity and unrelated customer service complaints about your shopping trip dominate the conversation, it drags down the value of the app for everyone else. That’s simply not what this space is here for.

Customer Service is no longer the norm.
Our Lowe's recently removed all of their cashier stands save one...and replaced them with all self-check outs. I hate it.
It takes away the "small talk" you do when you're there.
Sure it may save the company money but in the end, the customer is the one who loses.

Self checkout suppose to be faster and easier and it keeps the money out of the Customer Service Staff hands. So, those three people standing around and not looking busy; should be careful because those Self Check Stands have cameras and so do other things in those stores; they need to realize they look like three blind mice.

Three blind mice, see how they "run" when they find out they're being watched.

I don’t use self checkout because it’s always an issue with some of the machines.
