Currently going through the hiring process for a role in San Francisco. They told me the starting base was $110K, but this sounds like pennies in a city like San Francisco! I am concerned that if I make it through I’ll basically be poor in such an expensive city, not to mention the taxes. I also have a baby so child care I am sure is expensive. Is taking a government consulting role a dead end if long term I want to stay in the private sector? I’m currently at a boutique risk firm (3500 employees) where I also do some transaction services. A friend is offering to refer me to a higher level valuation and transaction focused role within a B4 government & public sector practice.

From a pure technical skill perspective this feels like a step up, but does moving to government and public sector position me worse than if I stay in risk?
