If everyone is slaving away in public accounting and the hours suck, etc etc, how is everyone so stressed about utilization?

We are not slaving, we get paid. But not enough for the amount of work, and BS we deal with.

The longer you stay with the firm, the more admin time you have, which results in a lower utilization. Also, I would argue that assurance has the most "guaranteed" charge hours while tax and advisory are largely dependent on the number and size of projects. I have a ton of small tax projects that I can barely charge any time to without destroying my budget

Is the phrase "slave away" not pc? I'm not saying anybody is actually a slave. Anyway the main point of the post is how are people being rated lower based on utilization, when it seems like there is so much to do?

Depends largely on industry and location. My office overhired for cips but is significantly understaffed in FS. So people in the same office same rank could have totally different experiences.

Why would you ever eat hours. The only person you hurt is yourself

Also, the way utilization works, since it's chargeable hours, those extra hours you do gets negated by the holidays, vacations, trainings, all hands, etc. at least, if you're taking the time off and not having to make up for the G&A hours.

Because some of us eat hours to avoid headaches resulting from going over budget.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a possible higher paying career that I would be qualified for based on my background?

About to finish my first year. I’m a specialist. Only going to hit 65% of my hours (took a 4 week vacation cause of wedding/hm).

I never say no to work and i have fantastic reviews, and the head of my practice (with whom I work a lot for) has great things to say about me.

I’ve been fully utilized starting ~June, but first few months were slow. Am i fine?!
