If I’m promoted from junior to mid level, will I be given the pay for mid level? Or just have a small % raise to my junior designer salary? (I’m young and still new to this world please educate me)

More than likely they’ll lowball you. You can always ask for more (no harm) but unless you’ve done something big you won’t have much leverage. If you’re unhappy with what they give you, start looking and flirting with other agencies

like

Someone once told me the only true way to get a decent raise in this industry is to switch agencies. On the opposite side of the same token - don’t get caught job hopping every year or so because that’s a big no no. If you can - stay at least 2-3 years at each shop you go to

To give you some hope, I recently got promoted from Jr to Designer and got a significant (like, 20%) raise. This was about after a year at my agency as a Jr, and had another yearish of general graphic design gigs/freelance already under my belt. So totally not impossible, but like others have weighed in, it helps if you’ve made a significant contribution that’s noticed by higher-ups. And make sure your manager is helping push to their higher-ups whatever salary you think you deserve!

like

Thanks for all of this I appreciate it! Very informative

I’m already OT exempt, and I work a lot of overtime. The other designer on my team is senior and we do a lot of the same work, which is absolutely no offense to the other designer, I just sometimes feel it’s unfair that I am still at a junior level with a junior salary. I have also been asked for specifically to work on certain projects and have a lot of praise from folks in leadership roles. I plan on talking to my manager about all of this when we discuss promotion possibilities and goals.

Sorry, but yeah, you likely won’t be automatically bumped into the mid-level salary. But hey, congrats on (hopefully) getting a promo. If you truly feel like you’re underpaid you can ask HR if you’re in the salary band for your position. They are not tell you what the band is, but if you’re below the assumed minimum for that position you could get a bump. If you can get a 8-10% bump that’s a win. If you’re currently overtime eligible know that your new position could be exempt and so you’ll want to make sure the new salary is enough of a bump to cover above and beyond any overtime you used to get. If your department lead, HR rep, and finance person didn’t take that into account find a polite way to point that out and they’ll make it right. In that particular case (going from eligible for OT to no OT eligible you should see a solid pay bump of 10-15% because it likely means you’ll now regularly be working over 40 hours and they think you’re good).

like

Typically promotions are accompanied by larger raises than standard. They are supposed to bring you to the bottom of the salary band for your new level, but if the %age jump is “too large” they often will cap it at 10/15% or something along those lines. This is place dependent. You could work for a good one! Or not. But hoping for the former. It doesn’t hurt to ask outright if you’ve been put in the new salary band for your level. They choose not to answer but at least they’ll know you know.

like

You’ll be lucky to get 10%.

15% is basically the max.

If you haven’t laid groundwork you’re not getting promoted in October. Those are all got approved over last couple weeks. Still worth having conversation and pushing hard in hopes for an April promo

Oh no, I’m pretty sure it’s been laid out. I was told it was well on track and 100% deserved. We had discussed it, and I was told we had to wait for the mid year reviews to happen

May I ask which office you’re in?

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?
