If you had offers in both New York and San Francisco for the same pay. Which would you pick and why?

I would be considering the following:
- company: are they financially stable and growing?
-clients: what accounts would you be working on? Are there ripe creative opportunities for you to strengthen and expand your portfolio?
-direct manager: is there one or the other that you feel you jive with more or can learn the most from?
-culture: NYC and SF cultures are very different, where do you feel you fit in most naturally?
-creative partner: will you be paired with a copywriting partner? If so, are they someone you want to be in the trenches with?

SF is a feces infested shit hole overrun by pseudo liberal tech blow bags. NYC has some of that too, but a whole lot more diversity, art, culture, energy, and excitement. Neither are particularly affordable. But I’m sticking with NYC — concrete jungle where dreams are made of...

likeuplifting

The amount of human 💩 on the streets on SF is nuts.

San Francisco. Outdoors. Napa. Closer to get into tech. Advertising is dying.

like

To be fair, he/she said advertising will never die, which I can agree with. Advertising agencies on the other hands are quickly disappearing.

like

San Francisco weather is less extreme, but overall worse (for me). Housing is more expensive. Public transportation is worse. And the people I know there say there isn’t any music scene to speak of—night life is bros hanging out in bro bars.

I’ll take NY every day.

likesmart

Sure, you don’t have snow, but you also do have fires.

like

New York. San Francisco is a tech bro town.

like

Saw comment above, disregard.

like

Really depends on your out of work interests. I’ve lived in both. In SF now and love the laid back nature of life and the great stuff that’s a short drive away. Miss New York all the time, but don’t miss how even the smallest things feel like a struggle. Would seriously consider moving back, but have a small child and want nothing to do with raising a New York City child.

like

NYC, more energy, better proximity to Europe, better arts and culture. I would just hope the job pays very well for either of them.

like

NYC for diversity of people, lifestyle, and interests. I have a lot of friends in SF and I have to say the conversations tend to be one dimensional and more material focused.

like

Have you ever come across this quote? I think it sums up your situation pretty neatly: “Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.”
—Mary Schmich

likefunny

I’ve lived in both places. NYC has way more vibrant energy. Also greater diversity of culture. SF is more chill, greater access to nature and outdoorsy activity. Both cities have great food. NYC nightlife and art/museum scene are better. SF living is probably more expensive. NYC people are more interesting and overall friendlier, in my experience. If you’re someone who wants to go on a nature hike every weekend, SF is your town. But for me, NYC wins in every other category.

NYC..work just gets done more efficiently. In SF rn, moving to nyc next year.

NYC before you're too old and it's too painful. Lived in NYC for 5 years; SF now. It's a love/hate thing with NY. After I left, I find myself constantly referencing it and comparing everything else with it (but I'll add places like Tokyo, Berlin, and Iceland to that). It's like a fucking rash that won't go away.

In very broad, generalizing strokes:
Arts and culture--NYC
Events--NYC
Nightlife--NYC
FOOD--NYC
Fashion--NYC
Interesting people--NYC
Blunt people--NYC
Public transport--NYC (never owned a car)
Career opportunities/diversity--NYC
Hustle--NYC
Dog shit--NYC

Weather--SF
Laidback--SF (also means less efficient)
Outdoors--SF
Passive aggressiveness--SF
HUMAN SHIT--SF
Homeless--SF this is very confronting and it WILL affect your quality of life plus mental health unless you can be oblivious to it.
Commute--SF (your current SF job offer might not require it, but be prepared for it if you change companies, and this is a life changer. 2hrs on a bus is no fucking joke. I'm writing this on my fucking commute right now and every seat is doubled up.)

like

CD3 - pretty sure that’s not what CD6 is saying. They’re saying that SF wins on commute (perhaps because it’s a pretty small city and many commutes are walkable or a short BART/Muni ride away) BUT with the big caveat that many jobs are also outside the city (Peninsula/Silicon Valley) which require an hour-long shuttle bus commute.

They are both great. It’s much more about what you want. SF is surrounded by nature, healthier lifestyle and NYC is the best city in the world but not so healthy.

like

San Francisco all the way! NYC depressing and too much of a struggle

like

Lived both places, and I’d say it depends on what you’re into, and where you are in your life.

I’m in my mid-thirties with a wife and dog, and SF is damn near perfect for us right now. Beautiful nature. Great food. High paying jobs. Amazing weather. We absolutely love it.

Lived in NY in my late twenties, and it was so much fun. Went out all the time. Ate cheap and good. So much to do. Loved every second of it. Was there for 5 years.

like

Depends on what work excites you more. Which creative director do you feel more connected to?

like

Nature, and legit local produce year round are perks I’d miss though.

New York, New York, New York. And this is coming from a Bay Area native.

like

Haha no, sorry that came out wrong. I was trying to suggest commuting is an SF problem to consider for OP, vs NYC where you don't have to. The BART's frequency sucks too compared to NY.

like

CD3 nah my fault, all good.

like

How this discussion can be so childish. If you would like to talk about the human feces at tenderloin, what about all the apts infested with cockroaches anywhere in manhattan?!? They are both amazing cities with pros and cons with different lifestyles.

like

Too many variables? Where am I moving from? What are the companies?

If it’s virtually a coin flip, choose based on the team you’ll be working with. That’s actually massively important. Which people were you more excited to spend half of your waking hours with?
