I’m 57. The age discrimination is prevalent. I interviewed for two door to door sales jobs and two retail store positions in the last few weeks. I have experience in both. They were Teams meetings interviews. The interviewers were trying to talk me out of the job. They would say “You had to be on your feet 10 hours a day, it’s not easy.” “You have to be able to deal with three customers at a time, it’s very stressful.” I don’t think they would say that to young candidates.

It's called ageism, I get 'the team is very young, can you keep up', from someone same age as me. Or 'this is a fast pacing environment' and we work long hours... Very sad, they want the expierence but not the age. I am more agile than most of the younger generation.

I am really sorry to hear that. You aren't the only person who I have heard this from. It seems like if you are over 40 it is really hard to find something. Hang in there.

That sounds like age discrimination dressed up as concern. If they are trying to talk you out of the role instead of assessing capability, that tells you a lot about their mindset.

Did a first interview with hr rep, went very well. she set up the hiring manager meeting for a few days later. Met with the manager. Another great conversation, went over time and was told I’d hear back about panel set up. Following day I get a request from hr rep to “continue the conversation” with manager. This is set up Tuesday.
Why do you think the manager wants to meet again? Good? Bad? I felt great about the interview when we ended.

So, I’m interviewing for a position that fits perfectly, HR likes my profile, had great conversations with them. Today I had a Panel interview with HR and the hiring manager. The manager is not experienced, it’s her first r manager role and she’s been in it for 3 months. I was prepared but was out of breath the entire interview, had a knot in my throat, had trouble finding my words. It’s like I had PTSD when this manager came into the picture. Ever had that?

Biz owners/entrepreneurs: Any tips on how to answer questions where the interviewer would want to know why I’d want to work for a company if I have my own. I’d want to reassure them that I have no intentions of leaving their company for mine or that there wouldn’t be competing priorities between us. I have a small photography biz. When this came up in an interview how did you address it? On my resume it does show that I’m currently a photographer w/ my own biz. I was selected for an interview.
