I’m a 1st year, going into my 2nd, attorney and applying for new jobs. The bulk of my work at this ID firm was mainly project based, although I got to work on several cases and have ample experience in motion practice, discovery, etc. With that being said, in my most recent interview the partner said he expects me to move the cases along, without any direct oversight (only to run ideas by him). The bulk of my cases are going to be Personal injury/premises liability etc (CONTINUED BELOW:)

Long story short, this job sounds ideal but I’m concerned I’m not well equipped and know enough to move a case along. He said by a certain point, maybe a month or two, I’ll be handling about 20-25 cases at once. I don’t want to back down just because I think it’ll be hard and busy… but I also don’t want to be stupid and lead the firm on if Im not ready. Any advice?

And it’s honestly incredible experience. My peers at other firms are doing doc review all day.

I would be very concerned at the apparent unwillingness to mentor and help you. Especially considering how young you are. Can you do it? Yes. Will it make you a better lawyer in the long run? Probably. Will it make you into the best lawyer you can be? Absolutely not.

I’d recommend trying to find an actual mentor.

I’ve been interviewing with Google since July. Passed the first interview but the team I was matched with ended up hiring someone else. Recruiter told me that she will let me know if any other opportunities arise as I’m still in the running and haven’t been rejected. I know that interviewing with google is a long process but I’m worried the longer I wait the more likely I will be rejected or just never hear back. Anyone else in this situation? How long until you got an offer?

So I get that in a corporate set up, you are supposed to be sharp and witty and think on your feet. Trouble is, I am extremely slow with comebacks. (Think Ross in Friends/Amy in B99) at the crunch moment, I generally end up not being able to give a good roast back. Unfortunately the best of them come to me like a few hours later (dinner/shower/TV) and I am left ruing and amazing opportunity to have gotten one back. I am awful at jibes and roasts.

Anyone else suffer from this?
