I'm a 2nd year associate at 9-attorney firm in SF Bay Area. I do general lit but it's half trusts/estates and my goal is to do all commercial lit. Desire a larger firm with more complex matters. Also wish to relocate and practice in Los Angeles. I've had interviews for some great LA-based opportunities but no offers. Anyone have advice on lateraling < 3 years practicing, and marketing oneself to larger firms? Interested in any success stories who lateraled up before year 3. Thx!

I'm new to marketing and I am not formally educated in it. I have just been learning through experience with the business. I'm supposed to put together a Market report for our sales team to refer to but I have been stuck on what I even include. I have an expensive subscription to a reporting database and I am supposed to translate these technical reports into 20-30 slides. I have a deadline to respond to a Motion for SMJ in 1 1/2 weeks. I just found out that my grandparents who I haven’t seen since the start of the pandemic will visit this week. I want to spend as much time as possible with them but it will be hard with my response due. I really don’t want to tell the Court that I am seeking an extension for personal reason, what would be a good reason to provide? I clearly don’t want to misstate anything but is there some general, vague language that can be used?

What’s the most unprofessional thing you’ve seen in a deposition recently?

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

I often hear lawyers threatening to “call the judge” during a deposition, generally when there is a dispute among counsel over a question that has been asked. Has anyone ever actually done this? What exactly is the judge supposed to do, resolve the dispute over the phone?
