I would be shocked if you found a firm that is hiring now that doesn't need their new hire to start for an entire year. So I'd say dont waste your time or theirs by interviewing now. Or put it right on your resume/cover letter.
Secondly, in the current market there are more applicants than jobs available. Employers would rather have the applicant who didn't take a year off. And they will likely get many applicants that haven't done that. Which means you are putting yourself at a disadvantage. I'm sure you would find a new job when the time came but I believe it will likely take longer and you may have to settle. If the market was reversed, it probably wouldnt be a problem.
Based on what you want described, you're going to resign from your current position without anything lined up. About 6 months before you want to start working again (or more), you'll start applying to jobs. You'll need to have a compelling explanation as to why you left your position and have such a large gap. You also will need to mentally prepare for the large pay cut that you'll take.
Thanks!
I think also, if you take a year off, you will need to be mentally prepared to get back into the flow of working. When you’ve been away from the vigors of prep for court, legal research, client interaction (positive and negative), it could be a shock to the system mentally.
Thanks yeah that makes sense
Taking a year off, you will still have to stay afloat with all legislation and some times law firm get the required reading at the company cost instead of you paying out of pocket. Also the transition comes with a new set of skill that you would have to learn, which will be time consuming.
