You put it plainly. "I'm currently making $53/hr on day shift. I cannot move to a less desirable shift and make less. My bottom dollar is $55/hr, exclusive of nightshift differential." See what happens.
Thank you so much. I just may have to do this
Is there a compensation matrix you can refer to, or ask for?
I know the country I live in had a very clear, stepped increase and pay by competency or on-call/emergency scheme that is paired with, tenure, experience, eduction and related skills to a new role.
I wonder if the lower pay is because day shift is more desirable and easier to fill. Either way - I'd focus strong on the fact that you make more now, then skills you bring tangible and unique to the role - but you should simple ask them "is this negotiable?" and don't say anything else until they respond.
If you know anyone in that role now? Check with them and see if you can get insights on pay, negotiating the rate or key skills needed, and use this as part of your negotiations.
Im in chicago, The offer is a night shift based pay which is why I thought it might be higher. I will ask if its negotiable and go from there. Thank you for your feedback.
I agree with Attorney 1. I would let them know you need them to at least match your pay in order to make the switch. I definitely wouldn't take a pay cut to move to that role.
Big corporate healthcare is becoming very rigid with compensation. Bring specific data of fair market value for your market. If they refuse, you can choose to move on. You can also ask for a sign on bonus. Those funds might come from a different pot. These systems make it seem you are lucky enough to get to work for them but there are still places who value experience. Don’t sell yourself short. The work you do is invaluable.
I can't imagine ever willingly wanting a night shift. You are very tough! I like what Attorney said. Be straight to the point. They are likely testing you to see how low they can get away with.
