I’m a second year associate with a good reputation but am feeling burnt out. How much longer would I last if I just starting setting hard boundaries (ie no responses after 10 pm, never more than a will do on the weekend outside emergencies, the work doesn’t get done if it requires working late consistently, etc)?

Pretty long, assuming you are a not-terrible person and your work quality is decent. No responses after 10pm is reasonable unless there is known time sensitivity. “You were sleeping.” Similar with weekend work, though you’ll increasingly find yourself needing to do more than a will do as you get more senior.

Not all teams treat 10:30 pm as prime time. Can try to minimize work with them and maximize with others. Or lateral.

If you come to write good briefs and process manage written discovery, owning ESI, you’re gold. ESI is huge bc senior folks don’t want to touch it.

The night time cut off is probably fine as long as you are generally responsive otherwise.

The weekend piece is definitely going to be more difficult, especially as you get more senior. However, I do know a lot more seniors who will stay up later at night during the week to try to ensure that their weekends are free, and that seems somewhat successful.

A6 responding here. I agree with T1 - if things are not critical then a simple “will do” will often suffice.

I also think learning to time things up makes a difference. If I have to work on weekends I will often wait until later in the evening to send something (even if I finished it a few hours earlier), with hope that I won’t get any feedback until next day at earliest. This is usually pretty successful.

I know multiple lit juniors or mid levels who go to bed each night at like 9/9:30 lol. Seems to work for them

Do you pay your credit cards in full every month?

I ask because I’ve let my credit spending get a bit lax since moving and adopting a puppy recently, so I haven’t been paying them off in full every month like I used to (though still well above the minimum payment, and keeping utilization at 30% or under). It got me thinking about how many people adhere to this advice.

I can’t decide if Im happy or sad. I’m relieved for now.

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

When and how do you push back on people senior to you? Fifth year dealing with supersenior associate (11th year) who completely lacks good judgment & common sense. One of those super smart but impractical types. As just one example, he recently called me to tell me to call someone who’s on vacation and ask them to send a calendar invite.
