I think the market is really saturated right now with folks trying to switch into the field. Have you checked out ADPlist and booked any mentorships/talks? It might help to connect with UXers who might have an idea of how to transfer your skills into UX (at least it’s been super helpful for me!)
Ahh! I studied UX design and started falling in love with biology near the end of my undergrad I did this capstone: https://kessenma.github.io/scicrunch.html
If you’re interested in being around UC San Diego (I’m in Detroit), the founder of SciCrunch is there and they may be interested in working with you if you have biology + ux design experience. However, they are funded by grants I believe so I’m not sure it’s pay scale is the same as some company’s salarys I see on fishbowl/blind.
after graduating i ended up at ford for 2 years, then 8 months ago got laid off due to the chip shortage and being in a low important plant (not a BEV basically). I spent some time making that website above ^ and I am so curious about other opportunities in the intersections in biology and UX design as well. But my ultimate desire right now is to go to a German speaking country, so getting all these goals to align may not work out. And I neeeeed money to pay rent now 😶🌫️

I felt the same way, one thing that helped me was reaching out to people on LinkedIn and scheduling a coffee chat /portfolio reviews, and eventually someone I met offered me a contract that turned into a portfolio project…
^ to add to that: once you have finished the course, don’t use the standard template design all Boot Camp graduates have. I recently had to hire for a jr role and every single portfolio looked exactly the same.
Your portfolio regardless of past experience will be what you need to get your foot in the door somewhere. I am on hiring teams in my past 3 roles. The market is infiltrated with people trying to break into the space but their portfolios are horrible. There are a small handful of UX designers who have never had “real life” experience working on a product but their portfolio showed me they can 100% do the job and understand what goes into fulfilling the roles responsibilities. I have hired people in that category and taking the chance on them was a true pleasure.
If you want my advice, have someone in the space critique your portfolio of work. Also, “self taught” UX… go and get some form of actual training. This is not like “graphic/website design” and how one can be self taught in that space. General Assembly has fantastic circuits/courses/boot camps to really understand what it would be like actually working in the field.
