You have to improve yourself, only knowledge, management skills and leadership attributes will make you feel secure, not other people’s background, you should feel great about having someone from the industry on your team. Consulting business is a all about teamwork, not individualism.
Know your own strengths friend. 90% of projects I’ve managed have been technical and I’m 0% tech. But I’m amazing at communications, client engagement, and PMO. I let my people run and provide support when they need.
You gotta own it. Support them and encourage them to shine.
With a smart, driven, and self-sufficient team and my own transitioning from this role of doing and being in the weeds of deliverable development to delegation and oversight, I’ve begun to feel unneeded and/or maybe they are better qualified for my role than me. How do I change this toxic outlook, increase my confidence and perspective of my value, and feel “secure” vs insecure. (I’m on the younger side, but have been fast tracked in my career)
I don’t want to be an insecure leader who feels threatened by others reporting to me who are succeeding with their work load, client relationships, and/or internal leadership relationships.
Has anyone dealt with or felt similarly before? How did you mitigate?
Let em know consulting is different. Manage up. Let em know their place by leading by example managing meetings etc
As an experienced hire, I super need my manager. You are valuable. I may not be a clueless kid, but I don't know the org or the work style. I'm older than everyone but the partners on my case and I make a point to show that I want to learn from the front line team. They won't resent you being a boss. They will pick a path if you do nothing, maybe unlike most recent grads. But they'll do way better if you orchestrate and integrate. Don't assume there's a problem.
