Consulting

I’m a senior consultant up for manager, but I’m managing industry experienced, smart, capable people who came in at an entry level. Recently, I’ve been feeling insecure in my role, how to deal? Tips?

You have to improve yourself, only knowledge, management skills and leadership attributes will make you feel secure, not other people’s background, you should feel great about having someone from the industry on your team. Consulting business is a all about teamwork, not individualism.

Know your own strengths friend. 90% of projects I’ve managed have been technical and I’m 0% tech. But I’m amazing at communications, client engagement, and PMO. I let my people run and provide support when they need.

With a smart, driven, and self-sufficient team and my own transitioning from this role of doing and being in the weeds of deliverable development to delegation and oversight, I’ve begun to feel unneeded and/or maybe they are better qualified for my role than me. How do I change this toxic outlook, increase my confidence and perspective of my value, and feel “secure” vs insecure. (I’m on the younger side, but have been fast tracked in my career) I don’t want to be an insecure leader who feels threatened by others reporting to me who are succeeding with their work load, client relationships, and/or internal leadership relationships. Has anyone dealt with or felt similarly before? How did you mitigate?

Let em know consulting is different. Manage up. Let em know their place by leading by example managing meetings etc

As an experienced hire, I super need my manager. You are valuable. I may not be a clueless kid, but I don't know the org or the work style. I'm older than everyone but the partners on my case and I make a point to show that I want to learn from the front line team. They won't resent you being a boss. They will pick a path if you do nothing, maybe unlike most recent grads. But they'll do way better if you orchestrate and integrate. Don't assume there's a problem.

Some of these posts are ridiculous. They’re like just exited consulting to FAANG/Niche Startup with $150k base and $400k TC with 6 months of experience, you can do it too! Then they ghost or explain that they are a former SWE 😬 coming from MBB. Going to some super Niche role that people with crazy backgrounds are recruited for. Congrats, but not everyone has that background

So many burned out colleagues I've met over the years are planning an industry exit strategy, either soon or down the line. Are you thinking of leaving the biz, for what, and why?

Thoughts on Big 4 -> PE ops role? 2 years out of undergrad, interviewing for a 2 year analyst role, would then do MBA afterwards. Interest post-MBA would be turnaround and restructuring Not a "name brand" firm. Smaller, local shop but role would have broad exposure across the firm and might involve work with investment team after year 1

Hi all! Just introducing myself. I’ve become a Bowl Leader here in the new biz bowl. Looking forward to it! This bowl helped me tremendously when I switched from prod co sales to full service agency biz dev. Great group! I’m now biz dev director for a production/post/animation facility. Please comment with a bit about you and your role. Thanks!

Started a job at a tech company. People, culture, hours, benefits/pay is great. However, the role is not what I was expecting. It’s junior & administrative/sales oriented. I thought it would be more analytics & strategy based. Just got another offer for a corporate strategy role. Culture isn’t great, pay/benefits aren’t as good but decent, but I’d learn so much more in the role & it’s a manager title . What do I do? I’m early in my career. I’m happy rn but the role isn’t good career wise
