Its brutal. Independent work is a wash tbh. Ive bewn submitting proposals for 7 months and i havent even been interviewed once.

Start by registering a DBA and if you are certain of going independent, get an LLC. You can open up a business account with the LLC paperwork. It makes a world of difference getting paid under a company name vs your name. Write off your expenses and look for more business, repeat! Good luck OP!

My best referrals came from networking with colleagues who went to other firms - some referred me to folks in their companies willing to hire contractors. Got a couple of projects from posting a profile and bidding on high end contract sites like Catalant, BTG, MBO Partners, etc.
Be sure to set up a business bank account and credit card and keep income separate.
Look into a business license from your city - license is free but you have to pay city taxes on earnings.
Get business liability insurance, $1M should be plenty. Annual fees for me are about the same as 1 month’s health insurance for a family of 3.
You will have to file a federal Schedule C. If you have a CPA or EA, they should be able to help. You can also set up a SEP-IRA and fund it to offset your taxes.
