I'm aiming for a specific niche consulting career, and I have some experience in that area but only within academia (postdoc now). Do I keep trying to get a job in that area (so far interviews, but no offers), or do I go for the Big 4 first to get industry experience and then switch to my preferred area? I am kinda old (38), so not much time to move around...

Apply to any and all. You can't turn down an offer you haven't received. You'll also need the practice interviewing.

Another perspective: how long do you think you will realistically live? And how long of a retirement can you have? Maybe 38 is not at all old and you may have 2 or 3 or 4 careers in your lifetime.

Good point. I meant old more in relation to my income, especially if they take me as entry level or close to it. Academic salaries are terrible.

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?
